For the second time this season, the Coupeville High School baseball team clipped Chimacum by one run, this time coming from behind to edge the visiting Cowboys 2-1 Monday, April 25.
The win sets up a showdown with Klahowya at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in Silverdale. Coupeville, now 5-0 in Olympic League play, upset third-ranked and defending champion Klahowya (3-1, 12-3) 2-0 last week.
The win over Chimacum also clinched at least second place for the Wolves with four league games remaining.
In the Chimacum game, both teams left runners on base in each of the first four innings before the Cowboys finally broke through in the fifth. For the game, Coupeville stranded 12 and Chimacum 10.
A two-out walk followed by a double gave Chimacum a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
Coupeville scored with two outs in the sixth inning. Clay Reilly lifted a soft liner just over the third baseman’s glove with one out and then was bunted to second by Joey Lippo. Reilly eventually scored when the Chimacum second baseman bobbled the ball just enough to allow Hunter Smith to beat out the grounder.
Cole Payne led off the seventh inning with a walk and Julian Welling got on board when the Cowboy pitcher misplayed his bunt. Both runners moved up on a passed ball. Payne stayed at third when Kory Score beat out an infield hit to load the bases.
After a strikeout and with Reilly at the plate with two strikes, Payne boldly broke for the plate in an attempt to steal home. Reilly hit a chopper to first, but with Payne on the move, Chimacum had no chance for a play at the plate and Payne scored the winning run.
Smith and Reilly ended the day with two hits, Matt Hilborn and Score added singles and Payne singled and walked three times.
