For the eleventh time, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County held its Festival of Trees in early December. And despite tough economic times, our community rose to the occasion supporting our mission to match children with mentors with their donations.
Due to the economic challenges, it has been a particularly rough year for the families that our organization aids, perhaps the toughest year in our 11-year history in Island County. Yet, the guests at our auction gala event lifted their paddles to bid on the many wonderful items and trees donated by local businesses and individuals.
We raised nearly $70,000. This money will pay for professional services to families, background checks and insurance, ensure one-on-one, ongoing supervision and support for every match, and provide cultural and social activities to enrich the opportunities for children.
We appreciate everyone who pitched in to make this event happen and of course those who donated generously.
It’s not too late to be part of Big Brothers Big Sisters. In the new year, be a “Big,” be a volunteer at our events or at our offices, serve as a board member, or donate. Any contribution—monetary or the gift of your time—can make a huge difference in the lives of our local youth.
