After a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime, host Port Townsend outscored Coupeville 4-2 in a shootout Wednesday, May 6, in the final Olympic League match of the season for both schools.

A Coupeville win would have knotted the two teams in second-place in the final conference standings and necessitated a coin flip to determine which earn the No. 2 seed and a home game in the opening round of the playoffs.

Since the Wolves (2-4, 3-10) lost, they have to travel for a loser-out, first-round match Saturday, May 9 (most likely Charles Wright at 4 p.m.)

Coach Kyle Nelson called Wednesday’s loss “our best team effort of the season.”

“We started a little slow and paid for it quickly,” he said. “Midway through the first half we got going and it was a tight, hard fought game from there. Quite a few near misses.”

The Wolves tied the match on an own goal that was “created by a strong, well-placed cross by Abraham (Elenes Leyva),” Nelson said.

“We our now looking forward to our district game on Saturday,” Nelson said. “I feel good about our chances.”
