Wasting two strong pitching performances, Coupeville dropped a pair of games to island rival South Whidbey this week.

The Falcons won 2-0 at home Tuesday, April 26, and 3-2 in Coupeville Wednesday, April 27.

The Wolves gave little support to pitchers Ben Etzell and Ian Smith, collecting just six hits and recording seven errors in the two games.

Freshman Etzell tossed a four-hitter Tuesday and allowed no earned runs in the 2-0 loss.

He and Smith had the only Coupeville hits.

After being shut out Tuesday, the Wolves broke out early with a two-run first inning Wednesday, but the runs stopped there in the 3-2 loss.

Jake Tumblin led off the first with a walk, stole second and scored on an error off the bat of Smith. Smith eventually scored on Morgan Payne’s single.

Coupeville’s only other hits came in the fourth when Etzell and Payne singled, but the rally fizzled.

Senior Smith threw a six-hitter, striking out eight, walking three and allowing only one earned run.

The Falcons scored one run in the second, and then added two more in the fourth on an error, two singles and a double steal.

Coupeville coach Willie Smith is frustrated with the repeated mistakes of his team: “We keep making the same kind of errors.” He added that mental miscues, particularly missed signals, are also plaguing the Wolves.

Coupeville (2-13, 1-10) has a nonleague game at La Conner Friday, April 29, at 4 p.m. and then finishes off the regular season at Lakewood (10-5, 9-4) Saturday, April 30, at 3.

The Wolves play Nooksack Valley (1-13, 1-9) at home Wednesday, May 4, at 4 p.m. in a district play-in game.
