It took two overtimes, but the Oak Harbor High School soccer team, behind a goal from J.J. Mitchell and stellar defense, won 1-0 at Everett Tuesday, April 29.

The victory sets up a big match with Stanwood at Wildcat Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2.

Stanwood (5-5, 6-6-1) is tied with Marysville-Pilchuck (5-5, 5-8) for first place in the balanced and tightly packed Wesco 3A North. Oak Harbor (4-6, 6-6-1) is one game back with three left. The Wildcats meet the Tomahawks in Marysville in the regular season finale May 7.

To keep pace in the North, Oak Harbor couldn’t afford to lose to winless Everett (0-10, 0-12-1).

Mitchell’s goal came after he recovered a rebound off an Alex Krantz shot that was deflected by the Seagull keeper Mack Temple and off the post.

Oak Harbor almost didn’t get to overtime. Goalkeeper Kevin Silveira “had an amazing save at the end of the second half,” coach Brian Thompson said.

“Our defense did a great job stopping their long ball and through ball attacks,” he added.
