It was a sweet Saturday at Coupeville United Methodist Church.
The congregation’s annual Strawberry Social was steady with attendees looking to satisfy their tastebuds. Members dished up a variety of strawberry items including waffles, short bread and sundaes. While dining on the sweet confections, visitors were entertained by live music and had the opportunity to catch up with friends and family.
Organizer Carmen McFadden said church members made 280 shortcakes the night before and she ordered 240 pounds of strawberries. The social is an annual tradition that started in 1914. Back then ice cream and cake were served at 10 cents a dish.
Proceeds raised from the event go to help the church’s missionaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
