A 34-year-old Oak Harbor man is facing charges for allegedly threatening to kill his girlfriend with a knife, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Larry Gaspar in Island County Superior Court Jan. 31 with assault in the second degree (with a deadly weapon) and harassments (threats to kill). Both counts are related to domestic abuse.

Gaspar pleaded not guilty Feb. 11.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the 18-year-old victim reported that she and Gaspar got into an argument at her Oak Harbor Road apartment Jan. 29. She claimed Gaspar grabbed her by the shirt, pushed her up against a wall, threw her on the floor and tried to drag her into a bedroom, the report states.

The woman told police she got away, ran into the kitchen and grabbed a knife to defend herself. She claimed that Gaspar took the knife from her, “banged her” into the kitchen wall, pulled her to the floor and held the knife to her face, the investigator wrote.

Gaspar allegedly made a stabbing motion with the knife and threatened to kill the woman, court documents show.

The investigator wrote that Gaspar denied the accusations. He was packing his belongings when police arrived and said he planned to go back to Colorado, the report states.

On Jan. 30, Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock set Gaspar’s bail at $30,000. On Feb. 11, Hancock approved a domestic violence no-contact order barring Gaspar from contacting the alleged victim.

If convicted of the charges against him, Gaspar would face a standard sentencing range of six months to a year in jail.
