The Oak Harbor High School boys basketball season got off to a rugged start as the Wildcats dropped a pair of lopsided home games Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 2 and 3.

Anacortes scored 52 points in the second half to dump Oak Harbor 85-47 Tuesday, then Ballard of Seattle used a big first half to win 66-43 Wednesday.

Oak Harbor has another home nonleague game at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, against Snohomish, then begins conference play at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in Stanwood.

Anacortes jumped to a 17-10 first-quarter lead with the help of four three-pointers, six offensive rebounds and two fast-break lay-ins off Oak Harbor turnovers.

The Seahawks began the second period with two more buckets off Wildcat mistakes and led 33-21 at the break.

Oak Harbor was still in the game, down 36-25 a minute into the third quarter, then the Seahawks’ Ty Johnson and Andrew Medalia took off.

The pair combined to score Anacortes’ next 22 points and led a 19-4 run that buried the Wildcats.

For the game, Johnson, a 6-2 guard, hit 11 of 15 shots, including going 5-for-7 from behind the arc, to score 29 points. Medalia, a 6-5 post, connected on 10 of 15 attempts for 20 points; he also had 10 rebounds.

As a team, Anacortes shot 53.7 percent (36-for-67) and went 10-for-25 (40 percent) from three-point land.

Oak Harbor shot 37 percent (17-for-46).

Drew Washington scored 21 points for Oak Harbor, Dyllan Harris added 11, Jake Sturdevant six, Zach Jones three, Gabe Groenig three, Shane Huttula two and Elijah Smith one.

Groenig had five rebounds and Washington three assists.

Anacortes out scored the Wildcats 16-2 off turnovers and 17-5 in second-chance points.

Anacortes out rebounded Oak Harbor 43-27 and committed only six turnovers to Oak Harbor’s 13.

Ballard blitzed Oak Harbor 19-4 in the first quarter and led 35-15 at the half.

Ballard forced 20 Oak Harbor turnovers and out scored the ‘Cats 28-1 off those miscues, and out scored Oak Harbor 12-1 in second-chance points.

Oak Harbor received a huge game from Harris. The sophomore guard scored 24 points, connecting on eight of 11 shots and going 6-for-7 on threes.

Washington chipped in with 12 points. Sturdevant, Jones and Sean Erskine had two each and Groenig one.

Groenig snared six rebounds and Jones had two assists.

All 10 Beavers scored. Josh Campbell, a 6-8 post, hit eight of 10 shots to score 16 points; Chase Deger also had 16.

Ballard shot an impressive 58 percent; the Wildcats shot 35.7 percent.
