Whidbey Island anglers will get one final weekend to try to land a chinook salmon in Admiralty Inlet as the recreational fishery for kings in Marine Area 9 concludes at the end of the day Sunday.

The chinook season started a week ago, but anglers had already caught 1,953 kings in the area as of Thursday.

The catch quota for the area is 2,483 kings, set by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“Anglers have been doing well since the fishery opened last week,” said Ryan Lothrop, Puget Sound recreational salmon fishery manager. “The fishery was scheduled to be open through Aug. 15, but anglers have already caught 80 percent of the chinook catch quota for the area.”

Pink and silver salmon fishing will continue over the coming months. The west side of the island is open for pinks and silvers with the rest of the island following suit Aug. 1, including the popular Deception Pass area.

An estimated 6.8 million pinks are forecasted to make their way into Puget Sound this summer with August typically the peak time to land fish from shore or by boat.

Shore anglers are already finding success with fish coming in waves followed by lulls.

The daily limit for salmon in Marine Area 9 is two salmon plus two additional pink salmon.
