Cedarcrest went to a half-court trap in the second quarter and the strategy resulted in a 16-0 run that helped the Red Wolves defeat the host Coupeville High School boys basketball team 82-43 Friday, Jan. 13.
The second-quarter swing wasn’t the only outburst by the Red Wolves. Coupeville started the game with a bucket from Taylor Ebersole and two from Nick Streubel and led 7-5. Then Cedarcrest heated up and outscored the Wolves 17-2 on the way to a 24-13 first-quarter lead.
Cedarcrest held a 29-19 lead with 5:25 left in the first half and then switched-up defenses. The new look, a trap, forced seven consecutive Coupeville turnovers and 16 straight points in a four-minute span. When the string was over, Cedarcrest held a commanding 45-19 lead. It led 49-23 at the half and 69-35 after three quarters.
The Wolves had one of their best shooting nights of the season, connecting on 17 of 51 shots for 33 percent. The result was a season-high 43 points.
Freshman Taylor Ebersole paced the offensive attack with 18 points, including two three-pointers. Streubel finished with six points although he sat over half the game because of foul trouble. Mitch Pelroy also scored six points, while Aaron Curtin had five, Gavin O’Keefe four and Carson Risner and Caleb Valko two each.
The Wolves committed 29 turnovers to Cedarcrest’s 14, which allowed the Red Wolves to put up 14 more shots than Coupeville. Cedarcrest finished 31-for-65, 48 percent.
Coupeville coach Anthony Smith said, “We will just keep plugging away to get better.” He said he was pleased with the drop in turnovers and the up-swing in scoring, then added, “We need to be a little more patient our offense.”
Coupeville (0-8, 0-12) entertains first-place and sixth-ranked King’s (8-0, 12-2) Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
