A 28-year-old Oak Harbor man who led a police officer on a drunken pursuit across the city last November was recently sentenced to jail.
Under a plea bargain, Tony Williams pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Dec. 28 to attempting to elude a pursuing vehicle, possession of cocaine and driving under the influence.
Judge Alan Hancock sentenced Williams to four months in jail and ordered him to pay $2,500 in fines and fees. Both the defense and prosecution recommended the sentence.
Oak Harbor Police Officer Jennifer Rutledge was patrolling downtown at 2:25 a.m. on Nov. 29 when she saw a red SUV speed past her. Rutledge chased after the vehicle, which went down Pioneer Way and onto Highway 20 at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the SUV, later identified as Williams, eventually stopped at the parking lot of the NE Barron Drive apartment complex. Williams got out of the car and ran, but fell down a couple of times, court records indicate.
Rutledge eventually got Williams to give up and lay on the ground by threatening to shoot him with a Taser. After he was arrested, officers found a bottle of crack cocaine in his pocket.
