Rallying from a two-goal deficit, the Coupeville High School soccer team squeaked by host Port Townsend 3-2 on penalty kicks Tuesday, Oct. 20.

It was one of those “not how you start, but how you finish” type of matches, according to Wolves’ coach Troy Cowan.

Coupeville completed the win by outscoring the Redhawks 3-1 in penalty kicks.

Regulation time finished with the teams knotted at 2-2. A scoreless overtime period sent the match to PKs and Jennifer Spark, Mia Littlejohn and Lauren Bayne connected on consecutive shots for the Wolves. That, coupled with Coupeville keeper Lauren Grove’s two stops, clinched the win for the Wolves.

After a lackluster first half, which found Coupeville trailing 2-0, adjustments (mostly in intensity, Cowan said) were made during the break.

Arisbeth Montiel, assisted by Littlejohn, scored first for the Wolves early in the second period.

“She just basically was a pit bull with the ball and refused to give the ball up,” Cowan said.

The tying goal “was a gem,” according to Cowan. Spark bombed in a 45-yard free kick.

The overtime was “a dog fight,” Cowan said, setting up the Wolves’ dramatic penalty-kick win.

Coupeville (2-1, 4-5-3) will try to lock up at least second place in the Olympic League standings when it hosts Chimacum (1-2, 3-10) at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
