Bank of America is closing its banking center inside the Safeway store in Oak Harbor, but the full-service ATM will remain.

Britney Sheehan, a media relations spokesperson for Bank of America, confirmed that the in-store banking center will close in May.

“Our banking centers have been and continue to be the cornerstone of how Bank of America builds and strengthens relationships with customers,” she wrote in a statement. “As such, we have been very deliberate in how we’ve built out our branch network over the last 10 years. Every year, we evaluate and adjust the distribution network to bring store coverage in balance with market opportunity.”

Contrary to rumors, Sheehan said there are no plans to close the banking center in the market’s grocery store in Anacortes, which is the closest location for North Whidbey residents. In addition, there’s a banking center in Mount Vernon.

Sheehan said the ATM will remain inside the Safeway for the foreseeable future, but bank officials may explore another location.

“It might be worth noting for your readers that just this October, Bank of America expanded its online banking, bill pay, ATM and debit card offerings, as well as telephone banking in Washington state,” she added.
