The Marysville Getchell High School boys basketball team fought off an Oak Harbor fourth-quarter rally to pull out a 52-45 win over the visiting Wildcats Friday, Jan. 15.

Oak Harbor trailed by eight heading into the last quarter but cut the gap to two late in the game.

The margin was three when the Chargers’ Collin Montez sealed the game with a clutch shot in the final 30 seconds.

(We) played great defense for 34 seconds of the shot clock,  (then) Montez caught a pass about four feet behind the three-point line with one second left on the shot clock and knocked down a real tough shot,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “At that point we were down six with about 30 seconds left. We were able to score a bucket and foul to stop the clock, but Getchell made some clutch free throws so we were unable to come any closer.”

The game was full of runs including when the Chargers scored six points in the final 10 seconds of the first quarter to go ahead 15-7.

Backed by its own run, Oak Harbor cut the gap to two, 21-19, at half time.

Getchell (1-2, 7-6) outscored Oak Harbor 17-11 in the third quarter to open its eight-point lead, 38-30.

I was really happy with our defense,” Weston said. “We held their leading scorer, (Cameron) Burns, to only six points. Unfortunately we allowed Montez to score 22.”

I was really happy with the well-rounded scoring from our team,” Weston added.

Dyllan Harris and Taeson Hardin each scored 10 points for the Wildcats, one more than Josh Cote. Malcom Jackson had six, Sean Erskine four, Princeton Lollar three, Diangelo McKinney two and Adam Nelson one.

Malcolm did a great job on the boards, (and) Dyllan played great defense, taking three big charges,” Weston said.

Taeson has really been stepping up as a contributor on both ends of the floor.”

Oak Harbor (0-3, 1-11) plays Marysville-Pilchuck (2-1, 3-9) at home at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19.
