McKayla Bailey fired a two-hitter to help the Coupeville High School softball team to an 8-0 nonleague win at Meridian Thursday, April 10.

Bailey, who surrendered and infield hit in the third inning and another single in the fourth, finished with eight strikeouts.

She was backed by a strong defense, led by Emily Coulter, who “made some nice plays at third,” according to co-coach David King.

While Bailey was mowing the Trojan (1-6) hitters, the Coupeville offense scored in each of the first four innings.

In the first, Madeline Roberts walked, moved all to way to third on a Bree Messner’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball.

In the second, Madeline Strasburg singled and scored on an error off the bat of Monica Vidoni.

The Wolves added three runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Walks to Roberts and Bailey sandwiched around a single by Messner loaded the bases in the third inning. Hailey Hammer singled in two runs, then Strasburg hit a sacrifice fly to plate another.

In the fourth, two walks and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases. Runs scored on singles by Messner and Strasburg and a sacrifice fly by Bailey.

Tiffany Briscoe and Erin Josue aided the offense by lining their first hits of the season.

“Offensively we worked yesterday (Wednesday) on staying back on the ball and looking to hit the pitch to the right and up the middle,” King said. “The players executed what they practiced. All of our hits were up the middle and to right. Both sac flies were to right field. It’s great to see the execution on things we are working at during practice.”

The Wolves (2-5, 3-5) play four games next week, beginning in Sultan at 3 p.m. Monday, April 14. Coupeville and the Turks (4-2, 5-2) will finish a game that was suspended in the second inning earlier this season because of rain and then follow that with a complete game.
