Amelia Berner, a member of Moving and Groving’s Island Flyers tumbling team, captured the bronze medal in Level 5 trampoline for 13 and 14-year-olds at the 2009 US Junior Olympic Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in San Jose, Calif.
More that 1,600 athletes from 200 gymnastics clubs in 38 states participated in the tournament.
To be eligible to compete in the nationals, athletes must be in Level 5 or higher and earn a qualifying score in either a state or regional meet.
Coach Pam Lovett said the Island Flyers qualified athletes for the nationals in years past, but this was the first time the team had an athlete compete at the meet.
Lovett said the 12-year-old Berner competed in three hotly-contested events in her age division, finishing 13th in Level 6 double mini and 41st in Level 6 tumbling.
“Although she is just 12, she competes in the 13 and 14-year-old age group due to the rules determining an athlete’s competition age,” Lovett said.
In the trampoline competition, competitors can be propelled up to 30 feet in the air doing jumps during which time, they can perform single, double and twisted somersaults.
