A lot went right for the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team in its double-dual meet victory at Shorecrest Tuesday, Jan. 7.
First, the Wildcats defeated Shorewood 43-18 and the host Scots 47-28.
Second, Oak Harbor welcomed back several wrestlers who were injured.
Third, Matt Zafra picked up two wins, which “were big for us,” according to coach Peter Esvelt.
Next, Mark Johnston and Kekai Tarrant scored bonus points, another action which earned praise from Esvelt.
And, finally, the Wildcats were able to collect the two wins and still rest some of their wrestlers, making sure the athletes do not meet the season’s match limit before the league matches are completed.
The night’s feature match, however, did not go Oak Harbor’s way. Jahleel Vester lost 3-1 to Shorewood’s Matthew Floresca in the 138-pound bout. Esvelt called the tussle a “great match” between two of the best wrestlers in the state. Floresca finished second in the state last year and Vester eighth.
Zafra, Tarrant and Johnston were the only Oak Harbor wrestlers to win twice without receiving a forfeit.
“We wrestled well…(however) we have a long way to go before we face our first league (Wesco North) opponent, Marysville-Pilchuck,” Esvelt said.
Oak Harbor (4-1) goes to M-P (2-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.
