Sequim withstood a strong first half by the Coupeville High School soccer team and defeated the visiting Wolves 3-0 Saturday, Sept. 13.

Sequim raised its record to 2-0; Coupeville is now 1-1.

“The first half was outstanding,” Coupeville coach Troy Cowan said. “Even though we were down 1-0 at the half we dominated play. We played the majority of the first half on Sequim’s side of the pitch, getting several good shots on goal. Unfortunately, we didn’t find the back of the net.”

Because it was a nonleague match, Cowan took the opportunity to move some players around in the second half and “see what some of the bench players could do.”

“Our new girls played well and got some much needed experience and exposure to the pitch,” he said.

Cowan liked the play of Bree Daigneault, calling her performance “incredible.”

Freshman McKenzie Meyer, taking over for Christine Fields who missed the match with an illness, “showed poise, patience and talent,” Cowan said.

“We put Ana (Luvera) up top today,” he said, “which was her first time playing forward and she did a phenomenal job.”

“We learned a lot about ourselves and understand we still have some work to do,” Cowan said. “I told the girls at the end of the game I was proud of them and that we need to remember the season is a marathon, not a sprint, and to stay focused on our team goals.”

Coupeville hosts Bellevue Christian (0-1) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in a nonleague match.
