Klahowya denied Coupeville a potential share of the 1A Olympic League soccer crown by defeating the Wolves 6-0 Monday, Oct. 26, in Silverdale.
Ten days ago, Coupeville hung with the defending 1A state champions in a 2-0 loss at Mickey Clark Field. Monday, the Eagles (5-0, 11-3-1) dominated the first half with a cascade of five goals.
“We knew going into this match if we were going to beat the champs on their turf, it was going to take a gargantuan shift in the style of soccer we played and luck,” Coupeville coach Troy Cowan said. “Unfortunately, we had no luck. Our strategy shift was sound, but the champs are the champs for a reason, and we still have a lot to learn.”
Cowan said the Wolves went back to “what we do best: possession” in the second half and played much better.
Cowan praised the effort of his team, adding, “The important thing to remember is we are still a young team that is developing our skills and talents. We just need to stay positive and upbeat. We will eventually climb to the top of the mountain and knock off whoever is there.”
Coupeville (3-2, 5-6-3) will hold Senior Night when it finishes its regular season against visiting Port Townsend (1-4, 1-10-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Coupeville begins district tournament play Saturday, Oct. 31, when its hosts the No. 3 team from the Nisqually League (most likely Vashon Island) at Oak Harbor’s Wildcat Memorial Stadium in a loser-out match. The time has not been set.
