Thursday morning, Oak Harbor police caught a 21-year-old man who was on the run from the law.

Detective Jerry Baker said Nicholas Wiggins had been “couch surfing” at a friend’s apartment on SE Fourth Avenue, but the friend called police because “there were people he didn’t want to be there.”

Patrolmen arrived and found Wiggins in a bedroom. Police searched him and found two credit cards in his pocket which had been stolen during a vehicle prowl the day before, Baker said.

Police arrested Wiggins on suspicion of possession of stolen property, as well as several warrants.

Last week, the Island County Sheriff’s Office sent out a press release asking for the public’s help in locating Wiggins. The Sheriff’s Office reported having probable cause for Wiggins arrest for multiple felonies, including identity theft, possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamine.

In addition, Baker said Wiggins is facing four misdemeanor warrants and is being investigated for a burglary case in the city. The Burlington police also are investigating him for felony theft, according to the detective.

Wiggins is being held in Island County jail on $10,000 bail.

“He’s probably going to be there for awhile,” Baker said.

Wednesday, the News-Times published an emotional plea from Wiggins’ mother, Julie Wiggins, asking her son to turn himself in. In the letter, she wrote that addiction to meth was the cause of her son’s problems.

Baker said police tried to get Wiggins to read the published letter from his mother, but he refused.
