Hot Rock Pizza in downtown Oak Harbor went out of business last week, citing a poor location and excessive rent.

“We had to close our doors,” read an announcement on the website for the family-owned business.

“We chose the wrong location for our business. The rent was killing us, and it did.”

None of the owners or personnel listed on the web site — Reid and Christy Schwartz, Dustin and Jes Wagner, Reid and Rachel Schwartz and Jennifer Rance — could be reached for comment.

The pizzeria opened for business in April 2009, according to owner Reid Schwartz’s LinkedIn page. It operated as a wood-fired food truck then, making appearances at Coupeville Farmers Market, festivals and private parties, according to news accounts.

In 2014, Hot Rock moved into a space in Old Towne Mall, at 830 Southeast Pioneer Way, formerly occupied by Cameron’s Cafe.

It had planned to move into a space formerly occupied by Angelo’s Cafe, at 670 Southeast Pioneer Way, but that deal didn’t work out.

The restaurant frequently catered local events. Just before it closed, it hosted the annual Christmas party for the Oak Harbor School District’s superintendent’s office.

Earlier this year, Hot Rock Pizza drew fire from Keep Rockin LLC for using a similar flame motif and having a name similar to that company’s The Rock Wood Fire Kitchen restaurants.
