In a game of momentum swings, the Coupeville girls grabbed the final one and rode it to a 46-41 win over visiting Cedarcrest Friday.

With the victory, not only did Coupeville (4-4, 9-5) avenge a 45-33 lost early this year to the Red Wolves, but moved within a half game of fourth-place Cedarcrest (4-3, 5-8) in the Cascade Conference standings.

The Wolves travel twice next week, going to South Whidbey, Tuesday, Jan. 26, and to King’s Friday, Jan. 29.

Cedarcrest created the first momentum swing by opening the game on an 11-3 run. Then it was Coupeville’s turn.

Cassidi Rosenkrance knocked down two free throws at the end of the first period to launch the Wolves into a 17-5 burst, highlighted by Katie Smith’s six straight points, to go on top 20-16 late in the second quarter.

Rosenkrance began the second half with five straight points and the Wolves led 27-19.

Cedarcrest then took advantage of Coupeville fouls and moved within one, 27-26.

The Wolves responded with a 7-0 run, then the Red Wolves took their turn in control and outscored Coupeville 9-0 to go ahead 35-34 midway through the final period.

The last run for Cedarcrest was fueled by its ace, AC DenHartog, the league’s leading scorer.

With Marie Hesselgrave leading the way, Coupeville regained control and outscored the Red Wolves 12-6 in the final minutes to claim the win.

Not only did Hesselgrave’s defensive effort put the breaks on DenHartog down the stretch, but her seven points and three-for-four free throw shooting carried the Wolves’ offense in the fourth period.

DenHartog finished with 12 points, six below her season average. She did, however, snare a game-high 15 rebounds.

Megan Smith topped the Wolves with 10 points, seven steals and five rebounds. Ashley Manker had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Hesselgrave ended with nine points and three steals. Rosenkrance scored eight points and passed for five assists, while Katie Smith scored six points. Courtney Boyd and Taya Boonstra each scored two points, and Kendra O’Keefe had one.
