Corey Trimbur and Brandon Stratton won individual titles and the Wildcats placed ninth out of 20 teams at the Everett Classic wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 8.
The Classic helped Oak Harbor tune up for this week’s show down with Everett on the Wildcats’ mat Thursday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.
The two clubs are tied for first in the Wesco 3A standings at 3-0. The Seagulls are ranked seventh in the state. The unranked Wildcats defeated 16th-ranked Shorewood and 20th-ranked Shorecrest last week to move into first with Everett.
At the Classic Saturday, three other Wildcats besides Trimbur and Stratton received medals. Joshua Crebbin (152 pounds) nabbed third and Jahleel Vester (112) and Corey Fakkema (125) finished fifth.
Trimbur (103) cruised to his title with two big wins (18-2, 19-3), a forfeit and a pin (3:07).
Stratton (145) blitzed through his bracket with a bye and three pins (3:40, 1:56, 1:21).
Crebbin bounced back from a first-round fall (4:52) to win three straight (14-6; pin, :44; 13-5) to tie for third.
Vester received a bye, then won 4-2 before losing 10-5 and by a fall (3:12).
Fakkema received a bye and then won by a pin (3:41). He lost 4-1 in the semifinals and then 7-3 in the consolation bracket.
Oak Harbor scored 89 points in the tournament won by O’Dea with 157.5.
Other Oak Harbor participants:
David Payne (140) lost 6-4 and was pinned (5:20).
Steven Souza (160) was pinned (5:24), won 3-2 in three overtimes and lost 12-1.
Collin Higingbotham (171) lost 9-2 and 10-8.
Jeremy Alonzo (189) lost twice by falls (1:24, 3:30).
Hunter Vail (215) lost 14-6, won 10-3 and was pinned (4:35).
