Seven North Whidbey Aquatic Club athletes earned high-point awards to help their team to a second-place finish (1,540 points) in the 34th Annual Spring Thunderbird Invitational at Anacortes’ Fidalgo Pool May 14-16.
Cascade Swim Club of Seattle won the eight-team meet with 1,541 points. Gold’s Aquatic Club of Woodinville was third with 392.
Leading the high-point winners with 10 victories in 10 races were Kelly Huffer (9-10 girls) and Laura Rosen (13-14 girls). Other NWAC high-point winners were Jerrin Concepcion (boys 8-and-under), Ethan Tack (boys 9-10), Joey Jepsen (boys 11), Josh Jepsen (boys 13-14) and Ciara Hu (girls 15-and-older).
In addition to winning every race, both Huffer and Rosen set team records: Huffer in the 100 back (1:22.85) and Rosen in the 400 individual medley (5:09.75), 200 back (2:28.72), 200 IM (2:29.05), 200 breast (2:48.36) and 100 fly (1:08.05). Other team record setters included Hu, Josh Jepsen, Tack, Cullen Wood and the girls 9-10 200 free relay (Huffer, Elisabeth Lundgren, Ameerah McCowin, Olivia Tungate).
Aquajets racing to 100 percent individual PR’s included Angele Dennen, Josh Jepsen, Rosen, Emily Schroeder, Jules Toney, Caleb Thompson, Cole Weinstein and Wood.
Those earning new qualifying times for higher-level meets were Jacob Jepsen, Emily Huffer, Josh Jepsen and Cullen Wood for the Pacific Northwest Swimming Championships in July; and Emily Huffer and Ethan Tack for the Age Group Sectional Championships next March. Both meets will be in Federal Way.
NWAC swimmer of the meet was Rosen, who, in addition to her high-point award and multiple team records, swam PR’s in every race and demonstrated precise pacing strategy in her 200’s.
The Aquajets next compete at the May 29-30 Big Wave Decathlon at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., where it will field a team of 72 athletes.
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college. Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.
