With a 4-2 win over Moses Lake Tuesday, Aug. 2, in the state tournament, the Oak Harbor Legion A baseball team advances to the championship series today, Aug. 3, along with Snohomish and Woodinville at North Thurston High School in Lacey.

Snohomish defeated Woodinville 10-2 yesterday, knocking off the tournament’s final unbeaten club in the eight-team, double elimination tournament. That leaves Oak Harbor, Snohomish and Woodinville as the only teams standing, all with 3-1 tournament records.

Oak Harbor takes on league rival Snohomish at 3 p.m. today, and the winner will tangle with Woodinville in the second game of the double header for the state crown.

All three teams come from the same district (Area 1). Oak Harbor plays in the northern division where it finished tied with Bellingham for the regular-season title; Snohomish finished third.

Oak Harbor and Snohomish tied for the district tournament championship when their game was stopped while tied because of rain. Woodinville is from the Area 1 southern division.

The Wildcats defeated Snohomish twice early in the regular season.

In Oak Harbor’s win over Moses Lake, it survived a shaky beginning and a stressful end to pull out the win.

Moses Lake scored both its runs in the bottom of the first inning on two walks, an error and only one hit.

From that point, Wildcat starting pitcher Andrew Snavely blanked Moses Lake with the help Ben Etzell, who pitched the final out.

Snavely pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and allowed no earned runs. He walked six.

He faced the minimum amount of hitters from the second through the sixth with the help of a double play and two would-be stealers being thrown out by catcher Austyn Walker.

Oak Harbor scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth to take the win.

In the second, Snavely led off and was hit by a pitch. Another hit batter and several fielder’s choices led to the run. The Wildcats left the bases loaded and had two runners forced out at the plate.

In the third, Jack Richter singled and scored on a two-out double by Walker.

Oak Harbor took the lead in the fourth with the help of a double by Anthony Steward, singles by Grant Schroeder and Etzell, and Richter being hit by a pitch.

Stewart doubled again in the sixth and scored on Etzell’s base hit.

The Wildcats finished with 10 hits, three from Etzell and a pair each from Stewart (both doubles) and Richter.

Oak Harbor also left 10 on base and that almost came back to haunt the ‘Cats when Moses Lake rallied in the bottom of the seventh.

After two quick outs, Moses Lake loaded the bases on a walk, single and walk with the top of the order coming to bat. Etzell ended the threat by enticing a grounder to shortstop Schroeder.
