The Coupeville High School drama program is thrilled to announce their production of their first musical, “The Fantasticks,” by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt.
This much-loved piece is not only the world’s longest running musical, it is a significant part of American theatre history, and marks the Coupeville drama program’s first musical entailing singing and dancing.
“The Fantasticks” tells the story of a young man and the girl next door, whose parents have built a wall to keep them apart. The youngsters nevertheless contrive to meet and fall in love. Their parents, meanwhile, are congratulating themselves, for they have erected the wall and staged a feud in order to achieve, by negation, a marriage between their willfully disobedient children.
Using theatrical techniques from many parts of the world and many periods of history, the play urges the audience to use their imagination, to follow the narrator, El Gallo, as he creates a world of moonlight and magic, daylight and disillusion.
The drama program’s production features Isaac Wacker as El Gallo, Carrie Walker and Tauni Moody as Luisa, Adam Curtin as Matt, Andrew Kessler and Joelle Anthony as Huckabee, Emily Chambers and Kacee Bailey as Bellomy, Daniel Nelson as Henry, Zack Harris as Mortimer, and Carly Kessler as The Mute.
“In these tough economic times, we know that all of our wallets are little empty. We wouldn’t want you to miss a great opportunity to see these hard-working thespians on stage — and this time singing and dancing!,” said Peg Tennant, drama advisor. “It will prove to be an entertaining evening – we promise!”
