Wildcats cornered by Bearcats in Monroe

Monroe’s 6-0 soccer win over the visiting Oak Harbor High School girls soccer team Tuesday wasn’t as lopsided as the score indicates, according to head coach Jeff Laiblin.

“The first 20 minutes were played in the middle third of the field before they scored a goal,” Laiblin said. “It all came down to one issue – corner kicks.”

The Bearcats, according to Laiblin, created corner-kick situations and then took advantage of their height and jumping ability to score their first four goals off corner kicks against the shorter Wildcats.

“Yes, they did out play us,” Laiblin said, “but take away the corner kicks and it’s 0-0 late into the match.”

Laiblin said freshman Ashley Everett played well in her varsity debut, and added, “As odd as it may sound, I think Maggie Gorman played well in the goal.”
