A shutout win was followed by a shutout loss for the Oak Harbor High School baseball team this week.

The Wildcats dumped visiting Mariner 9-0 Tuesday, March 20, then was nipped 1-0 at Monroe Wednesday.

Oak Harbor (2-1) starts Western Conference play at Shorecrest (2-1) at 4 p.m. Friday, March 23.

In the win over Mariner, Zach Zimmer and Dimitri Munoz combined to toss a three-hitter; two of the hits were infield singles.

Zimmer finished with six strikeouts and three walks over four innings; Munoz had three Ks in three innings.

Oak Harbor pounded out 12 hits, three by Andrew Snavely and two by David Kusnick.

Austyn Walker tripled; and Anthony Stewart, Jack Richter, Sam Glavick, Munoz, Mike Maletto and Cory Cameron all singled.

The Wildcats scored first in the second inning. Snavely singled and eventually scored on Glavick’s sacrifice fly.

In the third, Kusnick singled and scored on Snavely’s base hit.

Oak Harbor added four runs in the fourth. Glavick singled, stole second and scored on Maletto’s hit. Kusnick singled in Maletto and then scored on Walker’s triple. Snavely knocked in Walker.

Three more runs crossed in the fifth behind hits by Munoz and Cameron and a two-run single by Stewart.

Coach Tyson VanDam said, “Our pitching and defense have been a pleasant surprise.” Oak Harbor had only one error in the Mariner win.

Against Monroe, Oak Harbor had its chances but couldn’t punch in a run. The Wildcats had runners in scoring position (four times on third base) in five innings.

Monroe got the game’s only run in the second on two singles and a ground out.

Richter took the loss but gave up only three hits with four strikeouts and a walk over five innings.

Oak Harbor had five hits: Grant Schroeder (double), Richter, Stewart, Glavick and Cameron.
