A 20-year-old woman was sentenced to jail for hiding stolen goods under her baby and punching a Wal-Mart security employee in October of 2007.
Ashley Wright, a Kansas resident, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Feb. 23 to third-degree theft and third-degree assault.
Judge Alan Hancock sentenced Wright to three months in jail, which was the recommendation from the prosecution and defense. He ordered her to pay $1,217 in fines and fees.
According to court documents, security employees at the Wal-Mart in Oak Harbor took Wright and a 29-year-old man in custody after they were observed stealing DVD movies and baby clothing.
A security employee stopped Wright as she left the store carrying a month-old baby in a carrier. She threw a bag at him and ran, but the employee grabbed her. Wright punched the man and screamed that she didn’t want to go to jail. Wright dropped the baby carrier onto the ground twice during the struggle, the investigating officer wrote.
The security employee held Wright against a car in the parking lot until she calmed down.
Officers searched the baby carrier and found a DVD holder containing numerous stolen DVDs — including “Knocked Up” and “Bad Boys” — under the infant’s headrest, the report indicates.
Last May, a judge issued a $10,000 warrant for Wright’s arrested after she didn’t appear at a court hearing for the second time.
