The Marysville-Pilchuck boys basketball team — particularly Josh Bevan — came out hot in its 74-60 win in Oak Harbor Tuesday, Jan. 19.
The Tomahawks’ first six baskets were all three pointers as they zoomed to an 18-7 lead. Bevan connected on four of the long balls, teammate Raequan Battle knocked down a pair and the duo scored all of M-P’s first-quarter points for a 22-12 lead.
Bevan continued his torrid shooting all night, finishing with 34 points (32 over the first three periods) and six three-pointers. Marysville-Pilchuck sank 13 three-pointers in the game.
“Bevan and company shot the lights out,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “He’s a good player, and we had someone all over him most of the game, but he was able to still play well and hit some incredible shots.”
Oak Harbor’s Dyllan Harris tried to keep pace with Bevan and keep the Wildcats in the game, scoring 27 points while sinking five from behind the arc. Sean Erskine also gave Oak Harbor an offensive lift, scoring 16 points.
Oak Harbor made several runs but could never catch the Tomahawks (3-1, 4-9).
The M-P lead grew to 15 in the second quarter, then behind seven points by Harris, Oak Harbor narrowed the gap to seven, 34-27. The Tomahawks finished the half with a six-point run to lead 43-29.
The Wildcat hurt themselves by connecting on only three of nine free throws in the first half. They finished 11-for-22 for the game.
The Marsyville-Pilchuck lead swelled to 25, 60-35, with three minutes left in the third quarter and was 18 at the end of the period, 63-45.
Diangelo McKinney scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and the Wildcats sliced the deficit to 11, 63-52, but couldn’t get any closer.
“I thought we really were in control of the game at the end of the third and throughout the fourth,” Weston said. “We mounted a decent comeback, but M-P had such a good lead we were not able to get it close enough.”
“I was really impressed with Dyllan and Sean who both played really well, and I think Savion (Hollins-Passmore) played extremely hard on defense,” Weston added.
“We have to execute better on both sides of the ball.”
McKinney scored seven points, Ozell Jackson four, Josh Cote three and Adam Nelson three.
Oak Harbor (0-4, 1-13) plays at Everett (3-1, 6-8) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.
