The Langley teenager who caused a one-car accident that killed three young men last November pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide Monday.
The judge in Island County Superior Court ordered 18-year-old Kaylea Souza to be immediately taken into custody following the plea. Her attorney asked Judge Vickie Churchill to allow Souza to remain free until the March 30 sentencing hearing, but the judge agreed with the deputy prosecutor’s argument that Souza is facing a significant prison term and should be jailed to prevent flight.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, both the defense and prosecution will recommend a sentence of four and a half years in prison.
Souza was intoxicated when she crashed her car into a tree on Wilkinson Road Nov. 12, 2011. Charles “Mack” Porter III, 19, Robert Knight, 22, and Marcel “Mick” Poynter, 20, were killed.
