The 24th edition of the North Whidbey Car Show attracted several thousand visitors to Windjammer Park Saturday who reminisced over classic custom cars, fantasized over driving the muscle cars, and collectively marveled at how many hours were involved in maintaining, refurbishing and building the scores of dazzling vehicles on display.

Deciding was agonizing, but when the votes were counted the Best of Show trophy went to a rare and perfectly restored 1941 Hollywood Graham owned by Roy Deaver.

Jim Woessner, co-chair of the show, said there were 232 entires. This year’s sponsor was the Oak Harbor Rotary Club, which took over from the Lions Club which could no longer handle such a large event.

“It went smooth as glass,” Woessner said of the transition.

Lions Club members still played a prominent role, overseeing the record number of vendors selling food, memorabilia and auto parts to the car show attendees. Woessner estimated the crowd at between 4,000 and 5,000 people. Had the sun come out before 11 a.m., even more may have jammed into Windjammer Park.

“It was fantastic,” Woessner said in summarizing the day. He’s looking forward to next year’s 25th anniversary of the North Whidbey Car Show. “We’ve got a group of Rotarians trained and ready,” he said.

A number of special awards were handed out, including the Mayor’s Choice, a 2006 Ford GT owned by Mike Bailey; Commander’s Choice, a 1930 Ford Model A owned Pete Walstram; Editor’s Choice, a 1959 Chevy Impala owned by Barb Van Vliet; Parts Plus trophy, 2006 International CXT, owned by Phillip Black; Les Schwab trophy, 1967 Chevy Chevette SS owned by Gary Swanson; and Deaver’s Best of Show 1941 Graham.
