Rally can’t overcome miscues | Baseball

Even a big seventh-inning rally wasn’t enough to overcome earlier defensive mistakes, and the Coupeville High School baseball team lost 8-6 at Lynden Christian Tuesday, March 29.

Down 8-2 heading into their final at bat, the Wolves pushed across four runs and left the bases loaded to put a scare into the Lyncs (3-5).

Five errors and several bobbled balls in the outfield put Coupeville in a hole, according to coach Marc Aparicio.

The defense, however, wasn’t without its shining moments.

Kory Score, getting the start at first base, was involved in two double plays, one unassisted. Both were “almost triple plays,” according to Aparicio.

Score also drove in a run.

“Cole Payne had a great game behind the plate,” Aparicio said. “(He) threw one out at second, almost had two.”

Hunter Smith and Dane Lucero “pitched great,” he added.

The Wolves (2-5) and Port Townsend (0-5) meet in Coupeville for the Olympic League opener at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 31.
