Granite Falls outscored the Coupeville girls basketball team 11-4 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 47-37 win at Coupeville Friday, Jan. 7.

The Wolves (0-5, 1-9), still seeking their first conference win, travel to Sultan (2-3, 2-8) Tuesday, Jan. 11, and then wrap up the first round of league play when they entertain Lakewood (2-2, 3-7) Friday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.

Granite Falls’ Peyton Spencer scored nine of her team’s 11 points in the fourth quarter to carry the Tigers to the win.

Coupeville was within three in the fourth quarter before a “couple of defensive breakdowns,” according to coach Jackie Bykonen, allowed the Tigers to pull away.

The game was tight throughout and Coupeville led after the first quarter 10-7. Granite Falls held the lead at the half, 24-20, and at the end of the third quarter, 36-33.

Bykonen was pleased with her team’s effort: “The girls played hard; they played well.”

She pointed out that the guard play “was strong,” and said “Kendra O’Keefe has been stepping up her play.”

O’Keefe, always a dangerous outside shooter (she had three threes Friday), is expanding her game and “starting to drive the lane more,” Bykonen said.

Bykonen also liked how the Wolves handled the Tigers’ press: “Granite Falls is scrappy and the girls didn’t break down from the pressure.”

O’Keefe topped Coupeville with 13 points. Cassidi Rosenkrance finished with eight, Katie Smith six, Mehgan Metlow six and Taya Boonstra four.
