John Rangel, Sr. was born Oct. 20, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas and entered into rest on Nov. 27, 2013.
John was drafted into the service along with thousands of other Americans and served as a corporal in World War II.
He married his lovely wife of 63 years, Lilly (Gutierrez) in San Antonio, Texas before moving to Whidbey Island in 1950.
John began working at the Seaplane Base for civil service as an upholsterer until retirement at the age of 65.
He then started his own upholstery business in Oak Harbor in 1987 until his second retirement at the age of 91. John had quite a loyal following of customers who helped him achieve a very successful business.
Besides his meticulous upholstery work, John loved to carve wooden toys that he displayed in his shop. The family would travel to Texas every few years to keep in touch with their roots and family. John is survived by his wife, Lilly and son, Charles. He was preceded in death by his son, John Jr. and seven brothers and sisters.
A visitation for family and friends will be held 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Burley Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Burley Funeral Chapel with committal to follow at the Maple Leaf Cemetery. Donations in memory of John Rangel, Jr. may be made to the American Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mark Andreasen, Burley Funeral Chapel.
