Gerald Varner

Gerald Warren Varner passed away Friday, March 18, 2005, the day after his 82nd birthday.

Gerry was born in Beloit, Wis., March, 17, 1923.

Gerry was proud of his 40 year service to his country; 25 years with the U.S. Navy and 15 years with civil service. He entered the Navy in 1942, and was an air crewman in Catalinas, the PBY Flying Boats. He was also part of the Formosa Straits Patrols.

He retired as a chief petty officer and worked in the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station’s Calibration Lab until he retired again.

In April 1984, Gerry joined the Coupeville Lions Club and took an active role in leadership and public service. He served in several offices and was club president from 1991 to 1992.

Gerry served in sight and hearing conservation committees, speech improvement and used eyeglasses collecting for the needy in third world countries.

He also spearheaded the development of Rhododendron Park ball fields on Patmore Road. Gerry was an active Lion until his death.

Gerry passed away in a peaceful way, with his longtime companion, a poodle named Mimi, next to him.

Memorials may go to the Coupeville Lions Club for park projects. Service will be announced.
