Eva Catherine “Peggy” Achziger, age 102, died at Careage of Whidbey on May 7, 2007. She was born in Denhof, Russia, in the area of the Volga River to Phillip and Christina Stromberger. At age 2, she immigrated to the United States with her parents, coming through Ellis Island.

Peggy’s family settled in Windsor, Colo., and began farming. Peggy had two brothers and one sister. Dad worked as a clerk at the mercantile and mom worked on the farm. The family eventually moved on to Denver. Peggy developed a love of music as a child and would spend her allowance on sheet music. She loved playing the piano her father had purchased.

During World War II, the family moved to Michigan, where her father worked in the automotive assembly plants.

In 1984, Peggy and Jacob moved to Oak Harbor from Longmont, Colo. Jacob died in 1991. Peggy was a member of the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. She moved to Summerhill following the death of her husband. She had kept her passion for music throughout her life and as her health failed and she lived in Careage, she enjoyed playing her keyboard.

Survivors include her son Harry Achziger and wife Phyllis of Oak Harbor; Harold M. Achziger of Fort Worth, Texas, and sister-in-law, Helen Achziger of Seattle. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Achziger, daughter-in-law Pauline Jacoby and her sister-in-law Perlina Achziger.

Funeral services for Eva Peggy Achziger were held May 11 at the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Buss officiating. Graveside services proceeded at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
