John G. Souza, born Feb. 22, 1950, went to the Lord Sunday, July 17, 2016, in Gig Harbor. He had suffered a brief bout with cancer.
John had recently celebrated his forty-fourth wedding anniversary to his wife Mary.
Widely known for having created a masterful garden at his home, John was admired for his ingenuity and was frequently asked to participate in the local garden tour. He was proud of his garden art, Lily the dragon and two designer sheds that could be hobbit houses. He was also known in retirement as a helpful handyman who continued to hone his construction skills.
John graduated from Oak Harbor High School and Western Washington State College, aka WWU.
He enjoyed careers with the Washington State Fisheries Department, and as a realtor in Gig Harbor.
He is survived by his wife Mary; son Johnathan and his wife Yukako; daughter Jaclynn and her husband Bryan; daughter Jaime; two brothers, Frank and Richard; and three grandchildren, Felicity, Thor and Aidan.
Always with a story or a joke, neighbors say he was the heart of his Finholm neighborhood. Rain or shine, he was generally in his garden chatting with passers-by.
John loved all sports, especially soccer and golf. Always up-to-date on the players and sports news, John had the stats and info ready for discussion.
He will be sorely missed by many family members, friends and colleagues who loved him.
A memorial service will be held at noon Aug. 13 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Gig Harbor, followed by a reception in the church hall honoring John’s life. Black clothing is not permitted. This will be a light-hearted event. Please RSVP to Mary by text or phone at 253-224-9655.
