Maynard McManigal

Maynard L. “Mac” McManigal, 68, of Dickinson, N.D., died Feb. 18, 2005, at his home. A memorial service was held Feb. 23 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating. Military honors followed provided by the Veterans Drill Team. Interment will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville.

Maynard Bruce Hudecek was born May 14, 1936, in Beach, N.D., the son of Joe and Edna (Easton) Hudecek. At the age of four years old and following the death of his parents, he was adopted by Bill and Oria McManigal, and his name changed to Maynard Lou McManigal. He was raised by the McManigals 30 miles southeast of Beach, and eventually graduated from high school in Harvey, N.D., in 1955.

Maynard married Phyllis Olstad June 21, 1956, in Wibaux, Mont., and together they had six children. Mac joined the United States Navy in July of 1957, and was stationed near the Great Lakes until 1961, when as a Navy medic he was attached to the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Calif., from 1961 to his honorable discharge in 1965. He then began a 13-year career on Whidbey Island with the civil service as crash crewman on aircrafts. He also did lawn mower repair and worked as a tool room mechanic. Mac moved back and forth from Washington to North Dakota from 1979 to 1992, when he settled in Dickinson. While in Washington, Mac was very involved as a 4-H leader, president of Island County Fair Board, and loved to raise and show registered Polled Herefords. While in Dickinson he drove buses from 1992 until 1999, he really enjoyed the school buses and the children.

Mac enjoyed coin collecting, playing cards and dancing. He was chief of the Sentinel Butte Fire Department for four years, and also while in the Navy near the Great Lakes, was a member of the Blue Jacket Choir.

Mac is survived by his soul mate, Verona Hybertson, Dickinson; five daughters, Lorette Noble, Belfield, N.D., Louette (Keith) Pedego, Lake Tahoe, Calif., Lynnette (Walt) Bankowski, Oak Harbor, Deanna (Steve) Volesky, Dickinson, and Dawn Tennent, Oak Harbor; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary (Lawrence) Lee, Clyde Park, Mont., Florence McAffee, White Sulphur Springs, Mont., and Virginia Thompson, Holden, Mo.,; and four brothers, John (Pat) Hudecek, Livingston, Mont., James (Jackie) Hudecek, Springdale, Mont., Joseph Hudecek Sheridan, Wyo., and Leslie Hudecek, Sheridan, Wyo. He was preceded in death by his birth parents, adopted parents, two sisters, Helen and Carrie, his son, Joseph, and three nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
