Spencer W. Mason was born Sept. 3, 1922 in Malvern, Arkansas to parents John Wesley Mason and Carmen Brantley Mason. He died June 20, 2005 in Mount Vernon from complications of diabetes.
Spencer joined the Army in 1939 and served in World War II until 1944 when he was wounded while fighting in Belgium. His injury plagued him the rest of his life.
He met and later married Joanne Sheckels on Guam, Nov. 8, 1951, where they were both employed by the United States Government. In 1952 they moved to Oak Harbor and lived there until 1985 when they moved to Skagit County.
Spencer worked in the field of heavy equipment for many years, and then as a firefighter at NAS Whidbey Island.
He will be remembered for his affection for children and for his kindness and generosity to others.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his two brothers, John Wesley Mason, Jr. and Jack Mason and sister Mary Potts.
He leaves behind his wife, Joanne, a son John Mason (Cathleen) of Pleasant View, Utah, two daughters, Cheryl Nunn (Rick) of Oak Harbor, and Tammy Parkinson (Brad) of San Jose, Calif., and a sister Lucille Clark (Sam) of Hot Springs, Ark. Also surviving are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Humanitarian Aid, the Perpetual Education Fund, or the Boy Scouts of America.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. June 25 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sedro-Woolley. Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, Mount Vernon.
