Elfreda C. (Merryman) Shovald died Aug. 18, 2003, in California where she had lived for many years with her family. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Melford, son James, daughters Janis and Lori, grandchildren Ryan and Kristy, all of California; and her brother, S.B. “Bud” Merryman of Coupeville.
Elfreda was born in Fort Morgan, Ala., Oct. 9, 1922, the daughter of Master Sergeant T.C. Merryman and Mrs. Merryman. The family moved often during Master Sergeant Merryman’s military career, including time at Fort Worden and Fort Casey. Elfreda was 10 years old when her father retired and the family moved to Coupeville.
Elfreda grew up on Whidbey Island, graduated from Coupeville High School in 1942 and worked during World War II at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station as a teletype operator. Years after she moved away, she visited Whidbey Island as often as possible. She called Whidbey Island home and referred to it as “God’s country.”
She will be coming home one last time to be laid to rest at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville, Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. Following her graveside service there will be a reception held at the home of Bud and Ellen Merryman, 2078 West Madrona Way, Coupeville.
Freda will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving and giving person. She will be missed and not forgotten.
