Muriel E. Jones died peacefully, entering into the presence of her Saviour, at her daughter’s home in Bothell April 29, 2005, at the age of 80. Muriel was born Sept. 3, 1924, in Gary, Ind., to Jonas and Wilhelmina (Evans) McCarty.

Sally, as she was known, and her family moved to Dearborn, Mich., where she graduated from high school. After high school, she attended Wayne State University, where she met Richard Owen Jones. They were married Sept. 25, 1943.

Richard was a naval officer and Sally and their family followed his military career. The Navy sent them to Rhode Island, New York, the Philippine Islands, North Carolina, the Pentagon, Whidbey Island, Illinois, Okinawa and Seattle.

Dick retired from the military and accepted a supervisory position with the City of Livonia, Mich., where he and Sally spent the next 20 years. Oak Harbor became their permanent home in 1984.

Sally was a very devoted mother to her children and grandchildren. She tried to make every hockey game, school program and event her children participated in and eventually those of many of her grandchildren. She became a volunteer at Clover Valley Elementary School, working in Sandra Phillips’ classroom for many years. She was also a very active volunteer at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and any type of needlework and for a time was an active bowler.

Sally Jones is survived by six children and their spouses: Leslie and Philip Mansell of Mill Creek; Michael and Karen Jones of Oak Harbor; Joanne and Rodger Swanson of Bothell; Pete and Suzanne Jones of Macungie, Pa.; Julie and Glenn Bauer of Orchard Lake, Mich.; and Jonas and Cara Jones of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Klamser of Ventura, Calif., and Joan Schwartz of Northville, Mich., and by 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Jones.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Muriel “Sally” Jones will be held Monday, May 9, at 1 p.m., at Burley Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jon Brown of First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor officiating. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.
