Phyllis Marie Squibb, born May 1, 1926, in St. Paul, Minn., died May 21, 2005, at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville after a brief illness.

Phyllis moved to Whidbey Island two years ago from Murrieta, Calif., to be close to her daughters. She lived at Cottages at the Regency Oak Harbor retirement community where she quickly made many friends. She had a unique ability to make a friend out of nearly everyone she met, was genuinely interested in people and their lives and loved to hear about them. In fact, her first friend on Whidbey Island was the woman who picked her up from the airport and drove her to her new home in Oak Harbor.

She never gave up on any dream or inspiration she had and would always find a way to make it happen. That was evident most recently in her love of travel as she planned trips and enlisted her friends to accompany her from Portugal to Paris. It was all an adventure to her.

Phyllis grew up in Southern California from age four, living in Glendale and Rialto, and for 15 years, in Murrieta where she maintained many friendships.

Phyllis is survived by her daugther Jan Shannon and partner Sue Taves, daughter Marsha Morgan and partner Claire Morgan and son Steve Squibb, daughter-in-law Valerie Squibb, grandson Matt Squibb, and by her best friend of 35 years, Ann Branch of Plymouth, Mass., with whom she spoke by phone every day.

“She was a typical and an atypical mother and we loved her for both,” her children said.
