The city of Oak Harbor and the parents of Maj. Megan McClung have joined forces for this year’s 6th annual Maj. Megan McClung Memorial Run, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 at Windjammer Park.
The 10K run and 5K run or walk raises money to benefit the Semper Fi Fund, which provides assistance to Marines, sailors and other military personnel serving the Marines wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The new course will begin at Windjammer Park near the intersection of S Beeksma Drive and SW Bayshore Drive. From there the course parallels the beach around the harbor and winds through the wharf area on Catalina Drive, intersecting with Maylor Point Trail on the NAS Whidbey Island Seaplane Base.
Online registration is available up to 24 hours before the race at www.meganmcclungmemorialrun.com, but same-day registration will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. The 10K will start at 10 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 10:10 a.m. An award ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Cost to participate is $40.
This is a family-friendly event and children are welcome to participate. Dogs on leashes are also allowed on the course.
Maj. Megan McClung was the first female U.S. Marine Corps officer killed in combat in Iraq. She was serving as a public affairs officer in Al Anbar Province, Iraq at the time of her death.
