Graveside funeral services for Daryl V. Franzen will be held Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville, with Pastor Mary Boyd and Pastor David Engle officiating.

Daryl Vincent Franzen, 81, died Nov., 6, 2002, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville. He was born May 24, 1921 in Coupeville, to Charles Orange and Phoebe Elizabeth (Barrett) Franzen. He was raised in Coupeville and attended Coupeville High School.

Daryl enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1938 at the age of 17. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant. He began his military career as a cook and later became a searchlight technician. He was discharged on Oct. 31, 1945. He was married to the former Inez V. “Chic” Clark in Yuma, Ariz., on July 11, 1942.

Mr. Franzen returned to Coupeville following the war and began his apprenticeship as an electrician with Jim Cross and then with McGreevy Electric. He eventually moved on to work with Clarence Pease at Whidbey Electric.

In 1962, Daryl and his cousin Larry Barrett started Central Electric in Coupeville. That partnership continued until Larry retired in 1972. In 1983, Daryl retired and turned the business over to his son Derek Franzen.

Daryl loved carpentry. He was also a jack of all trades. He became the fix-it person for Coupeville, accepting projects up to the time of his death. He was a member of Coupeville United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Whitehead-Muzzall Post No. 7392.

Daryl Franzen is survived by his wife “Chic” Franzen at the family home, Coupeville; by three children and their spouses: Sharon B. Franzen of Coupeville; Alana P. and Mike Pizzuto of Mount Vernon; and Derek B. and Leslie Franzen of Coupeville. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Franzen of Chelan, Washington and two sisters, Vivian Fisher and Betty Jenne, both of Coupeville.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Jason Raines of Hollywood, Calif.; Ryan Samplawski of Snohomish; Jorie Samplawski of Oak Harbor; Lexis Chappell of Fernley, Nev.; Kyle Raines of Mount Vernon and Kelsi and Garrett Franzen, both of Coupeville. One great-granddaughter, Brooke Allen of Oak Harbor. One sister, Neva Banjamin of Milton, preceded him in death.
