Funeral services for Arthur R. Vogel will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerry Buss officiating. A private family graveside service will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, Coupeville. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

Arthur R. Vogel, 88, died on May 12, 2002, in Everett. He was born Sept. 11, 1913, to Robert and Anna Vogel in Twin Bridges, Mont. He grew up in the Snohomish area and has been a resident of Whidbey Island for more than 50 years.

Mr. Vogel served in the 248th and 14th Coast Artillery in the 1930s. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Coast Guard and as a lieutenant in the Army. He was stationed at Fort Ebey and Fort Casey. He married Mary Lagerlund in 1947 and built a home on Whidbey Island where they lived until her death in 1967. He married Kay Davis in 1970 and they also lived on Whidbey until her death. He built homes on the island during the 1950s and later joined the fire department at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, retiring in the 1970s. He was a longtime volunteer at San de Fuca Fire Station. Mr. Vogel was a member of the Friends of the Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum at Fort Warden.

He is survived by his children, Marilyn Vogel of Bellingham, Donald Vogel of Bellingham, And Richard Vogel of Ashland, Ore.; two sisters, Eleanor Wildermuth and Esther Youngberg, both of Everett; two grandchildren, Chloe and Isaiah Vogel of Ashland, Ore.; and four step-daughters and their children and grandchildren also survive.
