Cecil Calvin Cope, 85, of Coupeville, died May 7, 2008, at Careage of Whidbey following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Cope was born in Clifty, Tenn., on May 12, 1922, to Walter Cope and Lillie (Brewer) Cope. He was raised in Piper, Ala., and Cumberland County, Tenn., before moving to Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. Cecil married Elsie Balzer in 1943 in Columbus.
Jack was a lifelong Boy Scout, attaining Eagle Scout in 1940 and going through life being a scout master in several different cities. He was a draftsman and designer of industrial kitchen equipment and spent his working years setting up kitchens all over the country for IHOP as well as for many other restaurants. He had a passion for woodworking and upon retirement he and his wife Elsie began making wooden toys and selling them at craft fairs in Columbus.
Jack and Elsie fell in love with Whidbey Island and moved to Coupeville in November 2001. Jack loved sitting on the porch and visiting everyone as they walked by.
He is survived by four sons, Steve Cope and wife Barbara of Coupeville, Gary D. Cope of Pataskala, Ohio, Christopher Cope of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Richard Cope of Edmonds; also, two grandsons, Gary David Cope and wife Amie and Steven Cope Jr. and wife Vanessa; and one great-grandchild, Steven Cope III. He was preceded in death in 2005 by his wife Elsie.
In keeping with his wishes, no service will be held. Arrangements are with the assistance of Whidbey Memorial Funeral and Cremation Service, Inc., 746 NE Midway Blvd., Oak Harbor.
