Adrienne “Ady” Rice, was born July 11, 1923, in Mitchell, Neb., one of four children of Frank J. and Eunice B. Reed. She died March 6, 2005. Adrienne graduated from Mitchell High School and went on to attend both the University of Nebraska and the University of Washington, graduating with a bachelor of science degree. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Adrienne was active in music circles and played clarinet in both the Lincoln Symphony and the Seattle Symphony orchestras.
Adrienne married Earl “Jack” Gannon Rice, Jr. in 1946 in Seattle. The couple lived in many parts of the world until Capt. Rice, a career Naval officer, retired. At that time, they returned to Seattle where Adrienne returned to the University of Washington and earned a master’s degree in nursing, and became a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honorary sorority. She worked as a public health nursing supervisor for Seattle King County Health Department. Moving to Oak Harbor in 1974, Adrienne taught nursing at Skagit Valley Collage. Adrienne was active with the Whidbey Island Pony Club and The Chuck Dann Thursday Ski Group, as well as enjoying camping and hiking throughout Washington, Alaska and Canada.
After her retirement Adrienne and Jack moved to Estes Park, Colo., and then to Camp Verde, Ariz. In 2003 Adrienne returned to Estes Park to be close to her daughter and son-in law. Ady is survived by her daughters Renee Dennis of Estes Park, Colo., and Melanie Rice of Edmonds, and many friends in Oak Harbor and the Skagit Valley area.
Memorial services will be held March 19, at the Good Samaritan Retirement Village in Estes Park, Colo. A private interment will be held in Mitchell, Neb.
