Mary T. Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 19, 2009 at the age of 79. She was born Feb. 21, 1930 to Robert and Johanna (Dunne) Murray in Dorchester, Maine, and was raised there.
Mary married William D. Smith on May 28, 1950. Bill was a career Navy man and together, Mary and Bill traveled to duty stations in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Maryland. Following retirement, Mary and Bill traveled to Saudi Arabia for Bill’s work with Lockheed Aircraft. While in Saudi Arabia, Mary worked for the Military Exchange.
In 1980, Mary and Bill moved to Oak Harbor. Mary worked as a cashier for the Navy Exchange for many years where she was well known for her friendly, helpful attitude, earning employee of the month several times.
Mary loved playing bingo. When her health did not permit her to attend bingo anymore, she played bingo lottery cards. She obtained her first driver’s license at age 55. Mary loved her family and was loved by the friends of her children, who considered her home their second home. Her own children consider her to be the best Mom ever.
Mary is survived by four children and their spouses: William D. Smith, Jr. and Debby of St. Paul, Minn., Joanne M. Sankey and Tom of Oak Harbor, Mary E. Grace and Tim of Coronado, Calif., and Robert C. Smith and Terri of St. Paul, Minn.; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary’s husband William D. Smith, daughter Carol A. Smith and her parents preceded her in death.
Memorial services for Mary were held at Burley Funeral Chapel on Oct. 21. Memorials may be made to Friends of Home Health and Hospice, Whidbey General Hospital, 101 N. Main St., Coupeville, WA 98239. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
