South Whidbey scored two goals in the second half to comeback and tie the Coupeville High School soccer team 2-2 in the Wolves’ season opener at Mickey Clark Field Thursday, Sept. 8.

Lindsey Roberts boomed in a free kick for the Wolves’ first goal and then assisted on Mia Littlejohn’s left-footer later in the first half.

“(We) just had some mental breakdowns on defensive assignments (in the second half),” Coupeville coach Troy Cowan said. “I also want to add we did have two freshmen starting on defense and one on the outside.”

Cowan liked the play of Roberts: “Obviously, Lindsey Roberts was just stellar. All of her off-season work on her free kick really paid off.”

Cowan also liked the play of his freshmen: “Tia (Wurzrainer) and Mallory (Kortuem) were awesome for the debut and will only get better. Avalon Renninger did a great job as well and had some fantastic crosses and runs.”

Littlejohn and sister Kalia “stunned the crowd with exceptional footwork,” Sage Renninger and Bree Daigneault “were fabulous with some incredible passing and top notch communication” and keeper Lauren Grove was “solid all night,” Cowan added.

Coupeville jumps into conference action when Chimacum visits Mickey Clark Field at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.
